Shridevi Institute of Medical Sciences in Tumakuru has signed an MoU with Vaxonyx LLC for collaboration. This partnership aims to focus on AI-enabled bioinformatics and genomic research tailored for Indian populations. They will develop personalized cancer therapies by analyzing individual tumor profiles. The collaboration will also explore the creation of genomic datasets to improve genetic models. Moreover, they intend to develop DNA-based vaccine candidates for relevant public health issues.

Bengaluru: Shridevi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Hospital, Tumakuru, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with US-based Vaxonyx LLC to collaborate on AI-enabled bioinformatics, genomic research, and therapeutic development, according to a statement issued by the institute.

The partnership seeks to combine Shridevi's clinical and academic capabilities with Vaxonyx's expertise in DNA therapeutics, vaccine research, immunology, and computational biology, the statement said.

The collaboration will focus on generating therapeutic research data tailored to Indian populations and creating a translational pathway from laboratory research to patient care, with an initial emphasis on cancer therapeutics.

Under the collaboration, research will be undertaken in personalised cancer therapeutics by analysing the molecular profiles of individual tumours to identify potential targets for customised treatment strategies. The partners will also work on developing DNA-based vaccine candidates for specific diseases to address broader public health requirements.

A key focus area will be the creation of genomic datasets representing people of Indian ancestry through AI-enabled bioinformatics platforms. The initiative aims to improve the performance of genetic models across India's diverse population groups, including tribal communities.

The collaboration will further explore the development of human organoids, or miniature organ models grown from human cells, to support the evaluation of treatment approaches and drug candidates for various diseases.

Dr Kempaiah Rayavara, founder and chief executive officer of Vaxonyx LLC, said the Alabama-based company focuses on the unique biological characteristics of individual patients. "Computational analysis will help identify candidates for laboratory evaluation, with subsequent development guided by experimental evidence," he said.

Dr Shiva Kumar Rayavara, co-founder of Vaxonyx, said the company would lead the scientific strategy, molecular research planning, and development of computational tools under the partnership.

Dr M R Hulinaykar, founder chairman of the Shridevi Group of Educational Institutions, said the institution remains committed to advancing research in chronic, hereditary, and genetically mediated diseases. "The Shridevi Group will contribute clinical expertise, academic investigators, and research oversight across its medical, allied health sciences, pharmacy, nursing, and engineering institutions to promote scientific inquiry and develop solutions that benefit society," he said.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr Raman M Hulinaykar, director and trustee; M S Patil, director of human resources; trustees Dr Lavanya and Ambika M Hulinaykar; and Dr M L Harendra Kumar, principal of the medical college, among others.
